Reno Air Race update: 9/13/06

The Reno Air Races start today.  I was there last year on opening day, but unfortunately, I can’t be there this year.  Weather will be a concern this weekend, with a wind advisory posted for today from the weather service.  Also, there is a possibility of SNOW on Friday night (above 5000 feet, Stead is at 5046 feet).  This won’t be the first time that weird weather has occurred on race week.

There are questions about the amount of oil seen on these pictures of Dago Red and Rare Bear.  It is still early in the week, so we’ll watch for developments here.  Lots more information on this post, including some mentions of Cloud Dancer and Strega (mainly – they didn’t go up Tuesday).  There is a picture of Dago Red on page 2 of the post that shows the left side too, with plenty of ugly oil.  As you read further into the post, afternoon updates, with qualifying times are posted. Also, there is plenty of conjecture from everyone.  This will be an interesting week.

Anyway, the folks in this forum can tell you more than I can.  They are in Reno and experiencing most of it first hand, so I’ll quit rehashing what they post and let you read it for yourself.  And sign up if you like what you see.  It won’t hurt, I promise!  And there are lots of GOOD pictures

What is the status of Rare Bear? Do you know the source of the oil shown on the starboard side of the fuselage? Did it qualify? Who’s flying it?
I’m a former crew member from 1976 to 1989. Can’t make the races anymore. Just trying to keep up. Any info from you would be greatly appreciated as the “Official Results” don’t tell much.
Many thanks and good health to you.

"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." Mark Twain

Quote 2

From Marine Corps Chaplain Father Dennis O'Brien: "It is the soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives the protester the right to burn the flag." found on:
